Frequently asked questions

Can't find an answer? Ask us.

Is WiFiDrop a cloud service?

No. WiFiDrop runs on your own Windows PC and stores files in the folder you choose. Phones and computers on the same network connect to your PC directly. Nothing is uploaded to our servers.

Does it need the internet?

No. WiFiDrop works on a local network with no internet connection, including a phone hotspot. If update checks are turned on, WiFiDrop looks for a newer version about once a day when it can.

Can people use it from outside my home?

Not in this version. WiFiDrop only listens on your local network, which keeps it simple and private. Remote access may come later.

Why do iPhone uploads take a moment to start?

When you pick many photos on an iPhone, iOS prepares each one first, downloading the original from iCloud or converting the format. WiFiDrop starts uploading as soon as iOS hands the files over. Smaller batches start sooner.

Do people need to install an app?

No. They use the browser they already have on their phone or computer.

Why does my phone say the connection isn't private?

WiFiDrop encrypts connections with a certificate it creates on your PC. Phones don't recognize who made it, so they warn once. The connection is still encrypted. The setup guide shows how to continue.

Is there a file size limit?

There's no built-in limit. You can set storage limits for each person and each shared folder. Uploads are sent in pieces and resume if the connection drops, so large videos work.

What file types can people upload?

Any type. Files are always downloaded as attachments, so nothing uploaded can run inside the page.

Does it work on Mac or Linux?

The host app is Windows-only for now. People connecting can use any device with a modern browser.

What will Pro cost?

$29.99 CAD, once. No subscription. That includes a year of feature updates, and Pro keeps working after that. Sales tax is added at checkout. Pro goes on sale soon; join the waitlist on the pricing page to hear first. Free stays free.

What data do you collect?

The app sends us nothing about your files or how you use it. Our website and any forms you fill in receive limited information. The privacy policy explains exactly what.

Is WiFiDrop available outside Canada?

Yes. WiFiDrop is made in Canada and anyone can download it. Our privacy policy covers visitors from Canada, the EU, the UK, the US and elsewhere.

How do I report a bug or suggest a feature?

Use the feedback page. You can attach a screenshot, and the form asks for the details that help us fix problems quickly.
